Rotarians ‘It's just not Cricket'

Local Communities
At Wednesday 8th September 2010 meeting, the club is fortunate to have as Guest Speaker, Kevin Mooney and he will be presenting the subject "Don Bradman and the Bradman Foundation. So members should come along in the theme of the presentation, bring your baggy green cap, your bat and ball, or gloves and pads or anything else that you think is appropriate. - get into the spirit.

The interesting thing that will be addressed by Kevin is that Sir Don Bradmans impressed Kevin greatly, particularly with his rigid adherence to the principle of excellence in everything we do. This also applies to Rotarians with the motto of Service Above Self.

It was Legacy Week from the 29 August - 4 September 2010
Legacy is dedicated to caring for the families of deceased veterans. Today Legacy's caring and compassionate service assists over 100,000 widows and 1900 children and dependants with a disability. Legacy is a voluntary organisation supported by veterans, servicemen and women, and volunteers drawn from all walks of life. Our support and services now extend to include the dependants of members of today's Australian Defence Force who lose their lives as a result of their military service.

Legacy is dedicated to enhancing the lives and opportunities of our families through innovative and practical programs aimed at:
• the protection of individuals and families basic needs;
• advocating for their entitlements, rights and benefits;
• assisting families through bereavement; and
• helping people thrive, despite their adversity and loss.
NEW GENERATIONS
Celebrate New Generations Month by connecting through social media
Rotary has a lot to celebrate during New Generations Month in September. New Generations Service became the fifth Avenue of Service - joining Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service as a foundation of Rotary club activity - after a decision by the 2010 Council on Legislation, which met in April. Most teens and 20-somethings are active online, so it is often easier to connect with them through social networking sites than through traditional means. Harnessing the power of Facebook status updates and 140-character tweets is gaining popularity in the Rotary family.
Extract from LOOKING FORWARD - Edition 6
September is New Generations month, officially recognised by the recent Rotary International Council on Legislation as the Fifth Avenue of Service.
• Four Way Speech Contest
Throughout September we have the heats of the Four Way Speech Contest with heats on 1, 8 and 15 September being held at the Monash Business Incubator, 5 Hartnett Road Mulgrave. This year we have 23 candidates, almost 100% increase over last year. Please support your candidates by attending the heats. It is hard to work to an empty room.
• Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)
Do you want to learn more about the 4Ps of Rotary? - programs, process, protocols and procedures. Taught by trained leaders, anyone aspiring to lead a club or take on a District
Leadership role should seriously consider learning more about our global organisation. Series 3 Part 1 will be held on Sunday 12 September 2010. (cont p3)

NEWS

The first day of Spring found us in good spirits despite the constant rain and cold. It was our FORUM DAY, the first for this year. Larry started the procedure by giving us an excellent overhead presentation in preparation for the MBA meeting in two weeks time. We, as a club have been a sponsor for the MBA for two years and have been asked to promote the club. This being another way of trying to aim for new members, so an overview of what Rotary does to promote Peace, and by stressing the motto of "service above self" with a background display of what and who we actually support with acts of charity, made the whole effort a wonderful experience. Well-done Larry! Next, Peter invited Zilla to give a brief summary of what "Foundation" is and does. This is in preparation of the motion that we donate a sum to Foundation next week. Peter L, chair of Community, informed us that we intend to continue helping the Proactive Police unit with a new car. This incentive was started by our club and has now become, not only a District project but also an Australia wide one! Alan K, chair for Vocation stressed the "hands on participation" in being a mentor for the Sandy Beach Community Center, which provides courses in life-skills with the aim to teach how to achieve goals. The committee wants to conduct mock job interviews, offer scholarships, and keep the partnership with Youth Connect and RYLA. Richard, who was also the Chairperson and is chair for New Generations, spoke of the Science Forum and the need in the community for assistance for people/children who suffer from extreme poverty in schools in our area. He stressed the need to emphasize specific programs so that the money is spent wisely. Merv, chair for International, and his committee has look towards, Vietnam, Cambodia and Nepal. Vietnam is not interested in Rotary, but the need to help Cambodia and Nepal is very strong. Ann N. has supported projects in Nepal and Seda Douglas who came as a guest speaker is preparing a request to help establish a school in Cambodia. Kevin D. has introduced an idea to develop solar power and water systems for schools and housing. As Charles A. "CEO" for the Market was not able to be at the meeting, Zilla the only member for that committee in attendance mentioned some of the advertising that will take place for the "Antique Road Show that will take place on the same day as the Bentleigh Festival. We will be advertising in the new Coffee News and Chris Mara will be trying to advertise in other tabloids. It was a very busy morning ending with a wonderful Sergeant session thanks to Tim L.
Pres Peter presented PP Rob with a citation on behalf of PDG David Forster for our club for 2009-2010 Membership Recognition Award. It is always exciting for a club to be recognized by District.
The Jewish High Holidays begin this week. We wish our members a good and prosperous healthy New Year and Well over the Fast.

Zilla

Market Report Sunday September 5, 2010
Team: Charles Rener, Andy Woodard (pictured right), Robert Hilliar with Ian from Moorleigh Moorabbin and Tony later on. Our day at 6.15 in the morning after a very windy , stormy night. And straight away a bunch of stall holders assailed me verbally demanding that I do something about the weather, and I had to convince them that my name was Charles not GOD. We also had to give 4 rain-checks to 2 convincingly sick people and 2 with car breakdown (with tow- away receipts). It was cold windy and only 52 Stalls remained, and until 10 am. The market was almost devoid of pedestrians. After that it picked up the sun came out and pedestrians started to come, and even my attackers started to smile an wonder how we did it, no rain and sun! WOW! We also had some busker entertain us with extraordinary instruments. Zilla paid us a visit and wrote a piece about the busker (pictured left), refer below. Charles Rener
Additional entry from Zilla: On a very bleak Father's Day morning where the market was quite empty, an unusual man set up a busking position. All of a sudden the atmosphere changed as he danced with home made twig string puppets. Out of key and out of sync, people looked up and joined in laughing with him and everyone became happy!Zilla

The Four Way Test of Things We Say and Do

1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it bring goodwill and better friendship?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
